ACPO comment on crime statistics

ACPO head of crime Chief Constable Keith Bristow said:

“The latest recorded crime statistics and British Crime Survey results released today show that police are continuing to play their part in driving down crime and protecting the public from harm.

“Police recorded crime figures for the twelve months to June 2010 show a reduction of eight per cent annually, while the British Crime Survey shows the risk of being a victim of crime has also decreased.

“The public surveyed have also acknowledged the role of police in tackling issues that matter most to communities with an increase in confidence, along with a majority also agreeing that police on the ground are doing a good or excellent job.

“The police recorded crime rates show falls in all violence categories, robbery, burglary, theft, fraud, drugs, vehicle crime and criminal damage, however we are not complacent.

“Nationally we have been working to improve all areas of sex offence investigation. We remain determined to tackle people who commit sexual offences and we are making real progress in this critical area, particularly around giving victims confidence to come forward and report these crimes and we need them do so.

“These overall results are a strong indication of the dedication of our workforce and others to keep people safe. We remain resolute in our mission to provide a visible and responsive police service that tackles the challenges which matter most to the people.”
