The Police Service has stringent rules concerning notification of secondary employment and keeps these rules under review.
ACPO lead for Personnel Management, Chris Haselden said,
“The Police Service has stringent rules concerning notification of secondary employment and that means that many activities which would not be an issue in other forms of employment end up being registered. This includes letting of property, which anecdotal evidence suggests accounts for a significant proportion of declarations.
"Chief Constables, who consider individual cases, are clear that officers must not engage in activity which would adversely impact on their ability to fulfil their duties or would bring disrepute on the Service. ACPO will now work to ensure the national guidance is understood by forces and unjustified variation addressed.
“We will also be reviewing the guidance to ensure it remains up to date in light of the recent HMIC report, ‘Without Fear or Favour’.”
