ACPO comment on the Autumn Statement

ACPO lead for finances and resources, Assistant Chief Officer Nigel Brook said:

“We understand that today the Home Secretary has written to Police and Crime Commissioners to confirm that central government funding to the police in 2013/14 will be protected from any further reductions.

“This is welcome news. We wait to see what happens with regard to the following year, and the Home Secretary’s announcement on 19 December will provide more clarity for police forces’ detailed budget planning.

“We had estimated the impact of a further 1 and 2 % cut falling on police budgets could equate to around £264m or approximately 6,600 police posts.

“Every chief officer remains committed to doing all they can to protect frontline service delivery to the public, including those parts of policing which the public see at work in neighbourhoods every day, but also the less visible but equally critical policing work, from counter-terrorism to public protection, which together keep the public safe.”
