The UK is a world leader in the way hate crime is responded to but there is still work to do. One of our greatest challenges is to reduce the under-reporting of hate crime and this action plan builds on the work achieved to increase the confidence of victims and witnesses to come forward.
ACPO lead for hate crime, Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris, said:
“Crimes motivated by hostility to an individual’s characteristics cause a great deal of harm and fear among victims and communities and they have no place in a modern society. The UK is among world leaders in the way that it responds to hate crime, but there is still much work to do.
“One of our greatest challenges is to reduce the under-reporting of hate crime and this action plan builds on the work achieved to increase the confidence of victims and witnesses to come forward. We have worked closely with our key partners to help develop this plan and we are keen to ensure that it delivers results. Only by increasing reporting can we gain a full understanding of the extent of hate crime and it is for this reason that I urge people to report incidents to their local police service or report online at www.report-it.org.uk.”
