ACPO publishes Freedom of Information disclosures

The website now features a new disclosure log of all responses issued since the organisation came under FOI legislation officially in 2011.

Announcing the publication, ACPO President Sir Hugh Orde said: “I am delighted to make public the full log of FOI disclosures made by ACPO.

“Transparency is something which I strive to ensure is at the heart of our work as an association. This is why I long advocated the Association being brought under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act and why I was pleased when our voluntary inclusion was finalised in 2011.

“The principle of policing by consent is only sustainable if public confidence in the police is maintained. Openness and transparency are at the core of that.”

Ian Readhead, Chief Executive of ACPO and the ACPO Criminal Records Office, which includes the Central FOI Referral Unit, added:

“The publication of the disclosure log is the culmination of a long period of collation of requests which have been responded to by the Referral Unit since 2011.

“I would like to pay tribute to all those staff that have helped make this possible. Our commitment to freedom of information is resolute and I am particularly proud of the swift responses that we have been able to give applicants.

“The publication scheme is a rolling task and we look forward to adding to the published log as the months go by. In the meantime, we welcome all Freedom of Information Requests submitted to the organisation.”

ACPO is committed to being open, accountable and transparent. When the Freedom of Information Act was established in 2000, it did not include ACPO.

In March 2010 the Ministry of Justice confirmed that ACPO would be included under the Act, and legislation to effect the change came into force in November 2011.

In its response to consultation ACPO actively argued to be brought under the Act and the announcement it would be included was welcomed.

The ACPO publication scheme is adhered to with due regard for staffing and resource constraints, and as a result some information will have to be added to the ACPO website retrospectively.

A large proportion of ACPO's work is already public since it is information held and available under FoI through any police force.
