It is an important tool to tackle knife, gun and gang crimes and terrorism but should always be used in a proportionate way.
National policing lead for stop and search, Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey, said:
“Police will work with Government and the public to find a solution for the issues raised around stop and search.
“It is an important tool to tackle knife, gun and gang crimes and terrorism but should always be used in a proportionate way. It is a tactic which is most effective when it has the support of communities and achieving a balance which ensures transparency around the way it is used.
“We agree that changes need to be made to stop and search which do not jeopardise public safety and works fairly in the interest of everyone.”
