ACPO response to police reform

ACPO lead on workforce development Chief Constable Peter Fahy said:

“Tough challenges lie ahead for policing and chief officers are determined to do all they can to protect our service to the public. That is why, within the constraints of our model of 43 local forces, huge effort is being made to drive efficiencies, collaborate and make the best use of money that we can for the public. The key to reviewing pay and conditions is fairness. There are hugely difficult decisions to be taken in forces across the country but members of the police service see other parts of the public sector facing similar challenges and are realistic that sacrifices have to be made.

“There are now significant opportunities to reform pay and conditions for the benefit of staff and the public we serve. At the same time it must be recognised that the expectations and demands made on police officers are unique. People do not join the service for financial reward, but there needs to be fairness and the ability to reward staff for achieving higher levels of expertise. Tom Winsor faces a difficult task in making recommendations which would modernise the system in a positive way, while recognising the current financial reality. We need to read the detail of his review when it is published next week.”
