Additional funds directed to transformation and addressing firearms capability will help us to continue to reform policing

The Policing Minister has today confirmed the provisional police funding formula 2016/17.  NPCC says that the reduction in budget is significantly lower than we’d been expecting but that we remain committed to reform and forces will still have to find savings

National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Finance and Resources, Deputy Chief Constable David Thompson said:

“We welcomed the Chancellor’s decision in the government spending review to protect police funding so that we can continue to protect the public.

“The settlement today does include a reduction to the police grant and will require Police and Crime Commissioners to increase their precept if forces are not to experience a reduction in funds.  However, the reduction in budget is significantly lower than we’d been expecting.

“We remain committed to continuing to reform the service so we can be as effective as possible in meeting the threats and demands of today and the future.  Additional funds directed to transformation and addressing firearms capability will help us to do this but forces will still have to find savings in the next five years.

“The amount of money reallocated to certain national projects has increased, including funding for the future emergency services radio system.  We will work closely with the Home Office to understand how reallocated funds will be used to bring optimal value to policing.”
