ACPO Vice-President, Sir Peter Fahy, has responded to today's decision by the Parole Board to permit the release of Harry Roberts, who murdered three police officers in 1966.
Sir Peter said:
"We respect the decision made by the Parole Board to release Harry Roberts in its role to balance punishment and rehabilitation but we also understand the strength of feeling from many in the Police Service because this was a brutal crime which shook the nation at the time.
"We as police leaders send unarmed men and women out to risk their lives in the cause of keeping our communities safe. As such, it is crucially important to our model of policing that those officers and staff feel that the legal system and wider society supports them and treats any attack upon them most seriously."
