President of the Association of Chief Police Officers, Sir Hugh Orde, has spoken out in support of the Home Office's new modern slavery campaign and their dedicated www.modernslavery.co.uk website, which launch today.
Sir Hugh said:
“I am very pleased to support the Home Office’s campaign against modern slavery.
“The police service, under our national policing lead on modern slavery, Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer, have been hard at work not only tackling those cases which get reported to us but also sourcing and acting on intelligence and investigating the most effective means of policing this horrendous crime.
“It is a scar on the UK’s consciousness that, centuries after the abolition of slavery, the country still plays host to it, in industrial settings, in brothels, in private homes, and it is only through a mixture of thorough investigation and public education that we will tackle this scourge. This campaign will help with alerting people to the possibility of modern slavery being something happening right now in your community, but will, I hope, also help give those who have been enslaved the confidence to find a way of reporting their plight and letting the police and other agencies help them.
“Our commitment to ending modern slavery is resolute, and we will be working closely with all our partner agencies, government partners and campaigning groups to help us in our work.”
CC Shaun Sawyer is currently away. We are, sadly, unable to offer anyone for interview.
