Operation Sceptre, an initiative to tackle knife crime, started yesterday Monday 14 November. All 43 forces and the British Transport Police will take part in intensified efforts to crack down on knife-enabled crime and violence.
Throughout the week of action, forces will coordinate activity looking to target the root causes of knife crime. There will be focus on the different strands of education, engagement, prevention and enforcement, all of which are important in playing our part to reduce knife crime.
Early intervention will aim to stop those intent on carrying a knife and working with retailers, youth groups, charities and other partners are a vital part of a community led policing response.
Forces will continue to work closely with young people to further understand the reasons why individuals carry knives and also to educate them around the dangers of carrying one.
Most importantly, the week will aim to highlight that there are no positives to carrying a knife.
National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for knife crime, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Graham McNulty, said:
“The impact of knife crime on individuals, families and communities is truly devastating and long lasting.
“While the causes and drivers of knife crime are complex, early intervention and putting in place measures to tackle the root causes are absolutely essential.
“Reducing knife crime remains a priority and policing plays a pivotal role in enforcement activity, but we can’t do it alone. By working together with our partners and supporting communities we know that we can be more effective, responsive and take steps to prevent young people carrying knives.
“Officers and staff work tirelessly every day to tackle knife crime and this week, Operation Sceptre will intensify that action. We want to ensure that knives do not make it onto our streets and we keep our communities safe.”
During the previous operation launched this past May, 9,115 knives were taken off our streets and police made 831 knife related arrests.
A seven-day crack down on knife crime saw 1,947 people arrested, as part of Operation Sceptre. This enforcement activity makes it clear that police will not tolerate knife crime #JusticeTogether https://t.co/hMyOwh0VbV pic.twitter.com/XX5azhJHAU
