A new law to make it easier for police to catch and convict drug drivers took effect today in England and Wales.
National Policing Lead for Roads Policing, Chief Constable Suzette Davenport said:
"Every person who gets behind the wheel of a car under the influence of drugs is a danger to themselves and others.
"Improving the tools that officers can use to better detect those who drive whilst impaired by drugs will immeasurably enhance our ability to keep the roads safe.
"Drivers need to remember the potentially life-changing consequences of drug-driving, such as fines, penalty points, jail time or even the loss of livelihood if you work somewhere where an offence like this can lead to dismissal.
“Forces will be training their officers and making decisions locally about the best way to implement the new legislation, which will bolster existing measures rather than replace them.
"As with drink-driving, our message remains the same: Don't take the risk - it's not worth it and you will be caught."
