Police put transformation plans into action as another 28 projects receive Home Office funding

Police and crime commissioners and chief constables have worked to agree the Policing Vision 2025 which sets out the changes needed to meet changing crime and expectations.  Today’s announcement will help make the vision a reality.

The APCC and the NPCC welcome the ongoing commitment of the Home Secretary to a self-reforming police service, facilitated in part through the Government’s Police Transformation Fund.   The Police Reform and Transformation Board, chaired by PCC Julia Mulligan, reviewed all bids for funding in addition to making recommendations for a number of commissioned projects.

  National Police Chiefs’ Council Chair, Sara Thornton said:

  “The funding of a further 28 police-led projects demonstrate the commitment within policing to innovative change that improves our service to the public. 

“Projects include use of new technology and analytics to prevent and reduce crime, different models of supporting vulnerable people working with our partners in health, education and social services, and investment to develop our workforce and business support systems.

“Police forces and agencies have developed proposals with potential to transform policing.  They now have the opportunity to test them or put them into action, sharing the learning and benefits across the whole of policing, and in some cases beyond.”

Julia Mulligan, Chair of the Police Reform and Transformation Board, and PCC for North Yorkshire, said:

“Police and Crime Commissioners and Chief Constables are committed to maintaining the pace and ambition of change for the benefit of the public.  As part of this commitment, earlier this month we jointly published the Policing Vision 2025 which sets out the future for policing over the next ten years. 

“These funding announcements are a welcome step forward in achieving the ambitions set out in the Vision covering, as they do, a wide range of policing activities.  This includes improving the way we work with other public sector colleagues through to improvements in the way that the sector uses the data that it holds. 

“We welcome the Home Secretary’s commitment to providing support to the police reform programme in future years.  The Board will be working with policing colleagues to ensure that this support is used to best effect." 

The investments will support a range of projects developed by police forces or bodies including a programme to get DNA results to investigators faster speeding up investigations, a national analytics lab that will use police data to tackle complex policing problems and a license to practice for child abuse investigators to ensure that these complex crimes affecting some of the most vulnerable in society consistently get a specialist response.
