On the day that control orders to protect girls from female genital mutilation, Bedfordshire Police uses them to prevent two girls travelling to Somalia for the illegal operation
National Police Chiefs' Council Lead for Female Genital Mutilation, Commander Mak Chishty said:
"I'm really pleased to hear that Bedfordshire Police and their partners acted so quickly to safeguard these young girls, preventing them suffering the lifelong physical and mental damage inflicted by this practice. Anyone considering playing any role in this form of abuse should know that we are very clear - female genital mutilation is a crime and we will do all we can to protect victims and tackle offenders, whoever they are."
