National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Missing Persons, Chief Constable Mike Veale said:

“This latest data report offers the most comprehensive analysis to date of the of number of people who go missing in the UK. This report shows an increase in people going missing, attributed to the inclusion of people recorded as absent and improvements to police recording.

“Every force has been visited so we can understand the picture in their area and work with them to improve safeguarding arrangements and develop effective, lasting solutions in order to protect the most vulnerable.

“There are many reasons why children, young people, and adults go missing and we recognise that this is very often an indication of wider issues in their life. Police forces cannot solve these problems alone and we are committed to building a consistent, multi-agency response to missing people.”
