Working hard for greater accuracy and transparency in crime recording

National Police Chiefs' Council Lead for Crime Recording, Chief Constable Jeff Farrar said;

"The police service has been working hard to provide greater accuracy and transparency in the police recording of crime. We've done this by making sure we've got the right leadership, training, processes and audit in place.

"Accurate crime recording helps to ensure that victims of crime receive the service they expect and deserve as well as informing the public of the scale, scope and risk of crime in their local communities. The target driven culture with associated league tables was an integral part of the performance measurement of the police service for many years. The departure from a purely target driven culture has been welcomed by police chiefs.

"There is evidence that police forces are more accurate than ever in their crime recording but it is important that we continue to look at ourselves to ensure that we're managing performance effectively. I welcome Irene Curtis's review and will carefully consider its findings."
